On Tuesday May 21, 2019, during an ongoing construction project at the San Clemente Police Services Station, an area believed to contain asbestos was
disturbedby city contract workers. All individuals onsite at the time, approximately 30 people, left the building. County Risk Management and the City of San Clemente were contacted. The County Safety Manager responded to the station and determined additional testing was needed. Testing of the building was conducted by a certified asbestos consultant contractor hired by the County on the morning of May 22, 2019.
In the afternoon of May 22, 2019, the County Safety Manager verbally confirmed that the disturbed material did in fact contain asbestos and a possible contamination exist. A written report will be available within the next few weeks.
Until further discussions have occurred and remediation is conducted, all county employees will be relocated to the Aliso Viejo Sub-Station. Deputies serving San Clemente will temporarily deploy from the Aliso Viejo Sub-Station. This relocation will not affect the level of police services for the City of San Clemente. An OCSD Mobile Command Post will be placed in the parking lot at the San Clemente Station to assist patrol deputies in their daily duties.
The safety of the public and our employees is our primary concern. There was no interruption to police services provided to the city of San Clemente during this time.
